Professor Hoppe was awarded the Caminos de la Libertad “A Life for Freedom” prize at a ceremony 1 in Mexico City, Oct. 10, 2024.
The CEO of Caminos de la Libertad, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, head of Grupo Salinas, is one of the most prominent entrepreneurs in Mexico and Latin America and also a dedicated supporter of libertarian ideals. He actively funds projects aimed at promoting freedom ideas across the country, including think tanks such as Caminos de la Libertad, schools, and a university, among others. Mr. Salinas is closely aligned with the principles of anarcho-capitalism and is an avid reader of Professor Hoppe’s works.
The Caminos de la Libertad project has grown into an increasingly ambitious intellectual and academic program that includes essay contests, other competitions, symposia, conferences and roundtable discussions.
Caminos de la Libertad has established a life-achievement award named “Una vida por la libertad” (“A Life for Freedom”) to honor world leaders and prominent intellectuals who have made important contributions to freedom. Previous recipients have been Mikhail Gorbachov, former President of the Soviet Union, former President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic, British historian Niall Ferguson, Dr. Ron Paul and Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, winner of the Nobel Prize of Literature, the economist Arnold Harberger, the Cuban journalist, Carlos Alberto Montaner, among others.
To honor Professor Hoppe’s outstanding contribution to freedom, he was selected by the Board of Caminos de la Libertad as a recipient of the 8th “Una vida por la libertad” or “A Life for Freedom” award. The prize consists of a diploma and a monetary award, and was personally presented by Mr. Salinas. 2
In his remarks, Professor Hoppe expressed his gratitude to Mr. Salinas and Caminos de la Libertad for the honor and for their commitment to the ideals of liberty. The reception of the award was greeted by loud cheers of Hoppe-Hoppe throughout the conference hall.
Following the award ceremony Professor Hoppe was invited by Mr. Salinas to spend the weekend at his spectacularly beautiful Hacienda Jalmolonga, and there, most interestingly, during their long and extended discussions, Hoppe learned that it was Mr. Salinas’ grandfather, Hugo Salinas Rocha, who had invited Ludwig von Mises to Mexico during the 1940s.
